I listened to a webinar the other night.
During the Q & A, a writer asked, “Any tips for an Australian trying to sell in the US market?”
I was surprised to hear the person who facilitated the webinar say, “The most important thing is to keep reading American books and make your writing sound American. Agents will reject any manuscript if it is written with foreign jargon and dialect.”
I’m not sure what to make of this statement/advice, given that many European writers have written books using the Queen’s English and have been successful across the pond. I see no reason why a writer from ‘Down Under’ (who writes the Queen’s language) should not do the same.
Oh, then he said they (agents), may consider manuscripts from England…okay, so Australia is nowhere near England, but it was a British colony and they do write and speak the Queen’s English…
